Ferrography (Wear Particle Analysis)

Ferrography or Wear Particle Analysis is basically Oil Condition Analysis.  Ferrography is a specialized type of oil analysis used to study particle wear on machine components through analysis of contaminants in lubricating oil. It can be used to predict and diagnose errors occurring on machinery. Ferrography is related to tribology, which is the study of friction between interacting surfaces.

Ferrography Testings identifies Wear Particles, their composition, & their origin by visually analysing the sample under the microscope. It is basically a qualitative analysis. Wear Particles can be documented by digital photography.

Analytical Ferrography is among the most powerful diagnostic tools in oil analysis today. When implemented correctly it is an excellent tool when attempting to diagnose an activewear problem. Analytical Ferrography allows an oil analyst to visually examine wear particles present in a sample. This test separates solid contamination and wear-debris from a lubricant for microscopic evaluation. Analytical Ferrography can identify wear particles, their composition, and their origin by visually analyzing them microscopically.
